The loneliness of nursing home residents will subside in direct proportion to the number of families and friends of residents, who become aware of the Nursing Home Activities Mail Board Program.

1. Nursing homes are very busy places for the hard working staff but not for the nursing home residents. There is a lot of in-between time, in which the residents have difficulty finding activities to stimulate their minds and bodies.

2. Families, friends and volunteer visitors have some difficulties in finding things to talk about and do when visiting residents.

3. Since individual and collective loneliness is a well-recognized problem for residents, nursing homes do their best to schedule various activity sessions, recruit volunteers and hire as much outside entertainment as their budgets will allow.

The Mail Board directly addresses each of these issues.

1. It is always there, serving as a window to the world outside, offering friendly words of encouragement and a whole new realm of daily individual and socializing possibilities.

2. It offers a multitude of interesting things to talk about and a wide range of activities to share.

3. It offers help-yourself-in-house activities throughout the day. These activities do not need to be scheduled but can be if the activities department wants to do scheduled sessions, using the material from the board. All of us can help in group activities, thus offering fun to residents and also easing the burden of stretching activity finances.

The MLI ACTIVITIES program

is available at all times, offering such a variety of letters, that residents and visitors are inundated with a multitude of choices for activities and things to talk about. Therefore, any resident desiring social interaction can likely find someone to participate.

Residents continually have the opportunity to create their own fun, in their own time, at their own speed and abilities.
Any visitor can be everyone’s visitor.
The staff has tools to become better acquainted with the uniqueness of your resident.
It offers your entire family fun visits.
Residents, no matter what their abilities or disabilities, usually know when happy things are happening around them.

We have provided for different levels of ability and limitations, so residents can make friends, teach and learn from one another and use their own strong areas to do good deeds for other residents they feel are less fortunate. The simple act of assisting each other at the board or taking a song and a letter to the room of fellow can be a self image enhancing experience for both the giver and the receiver.

Sharing with each other and visitors develops an enveloping social community, thus relating to happiness, security, a sense of belonging and self value.
