LETTERS
AND STUFF
These unique and
special
letters are from men, women and children.
One
of our writers is a schoolteacher, Tom, who travels during his summer
vacation and shares his experiences through several letters to
residents. Though none of the letters from Tom are the same and by no
means reflect the variety in the letters from others, we are including
it and one letter from a child to give you an idea of how the letters
are presented.

Hi. I’m Tom, a
schoolteacher. I spend my summers traveling around the country
in my car. I see the
sights, meet a lot of people
and have a great time. This is one of my stories. |

I spent a week
in a cabin in a delightful little Tennessee campground.
There was a pasture next to my cabin, with 5 horses in it and
I would feed them carrots every morning. I thought that
would be fun but it really got hard because one horse caused
me a big problem. His name was Charger and that was a
perfect name for him. He wanted to be in charge. He wanted all
the carrots for himself and would run the other horses off.
I had to throw Charger’s carrot way out in the field and while
he was getting it, I could feed the other horses before he
could get back and chase them away. |
| This happened
every morning, but one day it made Charger so mad that he
kicked the fence and broke part of the fence post. It
didn’t fall down. The wire was still holding it up but when I
touched it the whole fence wobbled. I called the owners
so they could fix it. When I told them what happened,
they laughed and said, “That’s the way horses are. They live
by a pecking order. The strongest one eats first” |

There was a young
mare, named Shy that always had to stand out in the field and
watch the others eat my carrots. The others wouldn’t let
her come close to me. But I want you to know that me and
Shy were smarter than those other horses.
I would pretend I was
out of carrots and walk away from the fence. Then while the
other horses were meandering around, I would sneak down the
fence line and hide behind some trees. Shy would wait
until I was hiding and then she would ever so casually, come
over and hide behind the trees with me, to get her carrots.
Needless to say, she got the most, every day.
One day me and several
other campers decided to have a watermelon feast. I cut my
melon, laid it out on my picnic table and went back inside to
wait for my guests. When I came back out there were 3 wild
turkeys eating the seeds from my melons. It was great.
(Have you ever camped in a cabin?)
I’ll write later,

Hi,
My name is Jeremy.
I am 7 years old. I live in Colorado. I will tell you
about my pets.
I have a brother named
Mark. He is younger than me and wants to follow me
everywhere I go. He bothers me a lot, but that’s okay. He’s
nice.
I have 4 dogs. Luke,
Justine, Sugar and Ranger. Luke is a big black Lab.
I’m scared of the dark, so Mama lets Luke sleep on the floor,
by my bed. What she doesn’t know is that when she closes my
bedroom door, I get Luke up on the bed with me. That way
I am safe. Did you ever have a dog like Luke? |
|
 |
Justine and
Sugar are Corgis. They are Welch cattle herding dogs. We
don’t have any cattle, but they herd my little brother around
the house. I think that’s funny. Justine is brown and white.
Sugar is black and white. They don’t play. They just eat and
run around the house a lot. |
 |
|
Ranger is part poodle and part Weenie dog.
He barks all the time. He plays chase with me. He
pulls on my pant leg and growls. He’s funny when he does that.
I have a cat named Sam. He likes my
dad best. He always wants to sit on my dad’s lap. He
eats cat food and carrots.
|
|
I
have a parakeet but he doesn’t
talk. He will sit on my finger, if I stay still. I
wanted to name him Budge or Pert. Mom suggested I name him
Perty Budge, so I did. He is blue and white. I
took him to school for show and tell one time. The teacher
gave him a paper clip and he went crazy over it. He got
so noisy, playing with it that the teacher had to cover up his
cage with a towel, so he would be quiet.
I like pets and am glad we have a lot of them.

 |
|
I hope you are feeling
fine. If you are not, I think you would feel better if
you remember one of your pets. What kind of pets did you have
when you were a kid? Do you have stories about them?
Your friend,
Jeremy
