What are LETTERS TO NURSING HOME RESIDENTS?

“If you could fill one page with a letter, poem, game or idea that you think residents would enjoy, what would that be?”

Some people wrote letters about

  • Their lives, interests, hobbies, careers, families, friends and pets

  • Interesting people they have met and places they have been

  • Fun vacations and strange or remarkable things they have seen

  • Humorous things that have happened to them

  • Events and accomplishments that make them proud

Others helped to develop activities around an ongoing theme.

  • One man wrote several delightfully entertaining letters about his experiences traveling around the country.
  • An elderly woman from a small town wrote GOSSIP LETTERS about her life and the lives of people in her town.
  • A music teacher organized a sing-along program.
  • A psychologist devised a stress management idea.
  • A college professor believed that learning something new every day should be a never-ending journey of opportunity and sent items for the learning page.
  • A doctor told us that humor is great therapy, so we included a collection of light humor photos.
  • A little girl came up with a great idea for exercise sessions.

School children wrote letters

  • Sent pictures they had made in school
  • Made up puzzles and riddle games
  • Wrote about themselves and their future aspirations

The postings also include but are not limited to - Light-hearted facts, trivia and games as well as personal stories, poems and pictures from treasured scrapbooks.

The letters are

  • Family-oriented and written to the adult level (though some are from children)
  • Carefully edited for wholesome, non-alarming wording
  • Positive, with interesting content
  • Easy to read in enlarged print

Each letter has a picture or graphic relating to it’s subject matter.

The letters and songs are designed to bring happy thoughts and sharing. All of the mail has been carefully chosen to be non-alarming and non-threatening. But this is about real life. When the subject matter is serious, it is handled in a kind or humorous and uplifting manner.
